When Is There Ever a Break?
The season just wrapped up. It was long, and our family is exhausted from the constant time at the field. The kids are sad it's over, but wait: tryouts for next year's team are next week.
When is there ever a break?
We have to keep going, right? If we don't, we'll fall behind. How can I give myself the best chance to compete with all these kids who never stop?
Maybe that's not actually the case.
The Main Idea
The off-season can be just that: an OFF-season. It can also be the most productive season of your year. The difference comes down to one thing: the plan.
What to Do About It
Look back. When the season ends, take time to reflect. Remember the mountaintop moments and the struggles. Seasons come and go, and every player only gets so many of them. Value those memories like gold.
Check in with yourself. How are you feeling? Exhausted physically? Emotionally? Spiritually? Baseball can't rule our lives, or it becomes the thing that tears us apart. Reset your priorities so they line up with how you want your life to go.
Get away from the game. I don't care how good you feel. Going year after year without a real break will wear you down. I don't care what people are telling you, asking of you, or demanding you show up for. Zoom out to the 30,000-foot view and you'll see it: getting refreshed and stepping away from the game is a good thing.
Get a plan. Floating from practice to practice and tournament to tournament isn't all bad. It gives you reps and experience. But if your off-season feels the same as the middle of the season, it's gone too far. That kind of schedule also isn't built for personal development. It's built for keeping up with everyone else today, not for getting better for tomorrow. A real plan has structured goals, monitored workload, and clear objectives, and it gets you ready for when it actually matters: next season.
Your Next Step
Take inventory. How is your family's time being spent? How are you feeling? How much is the sport demanding of you right now?
Then ask the harder questions. Who is leading your development? Do you know where that plan is taking you over the next few months? Is it just more practice and low-value reps, or is there a clear plan that keeps baseball in its right place while you still get better?
If you don't have that plan yet, now is the time to build one. That's what we build at Roots Athletics. Reach out to start your off-season plan.
